7.1 Exercises, examples & solutions

Updated: 20 Jul 2026

Here are some examples and exercises that deal with collisions.

Worked examples

Particles on a row

Problem description
Develop the solution
Evaluate the problem
Assess the problem

Four point-particles are positioned on the xx-axis as show in the figure. All particles are at rest except for the most left one. This particle has mass 4m4m and is moving at a velocity vv. It will collide with the particle of mass 3m3m. The collision is completely elastic. Subsequently, particle 3m3m will collide completely elastic with particle 2m2m. Finally, particle 2m2m will collide completely elastic with particle mm.

Colliding particles.

The problem is one dimensional.

What is the velocity of particle mm after the collisions?
